About this activity.
The main themes in Carola Schapals paintings are nature, landscape and architecture and their fusion. She combines in her work the organic forms from nature with graphically created forms by man (architecture) where impermanence is always in favor of nature.
Much is always possible in Carola's paintings, but there is always that typical Schapals mystique that hangs over the painting. At first the viewer perceives the seemingly familiar, but upon closer inspection he discovers the subtle confusion and uncertainty in the image. The suddenly brightening spots of color and deep shadows enhance this effect and add depth to the already highly aesthetic images.
She finds her motifs on trips through nature in the immediate urban environment, while traveling, as well as in botanical gardens, in the wilderness or in allotments. She loves the silence of these places. While painting in the studio or on location (plein air) she constantly switches stylistically from concrete to abstract, from precisely descriptive to an intuitive registration. A work with her is not complete until it has reached a certain satisfactory atmospheric density.
