Different Feelings

Forma Aktua
7 May 2025 to 8 June 2025

About this activity.

Different Feelings brings together four artists who each portray emotions, experiences and atmosphere in their own unique way. Their work moves between realism and alienation, between light and silence, between the visible and the tangible. What connects them is the way in which they invite the viewer to introspect, to experience a different reality. Sometimes poetic, sometimes confrontational, but always personal. Come and experience it for yourself!

Joost Doornik Colourful works with attention to feeling and atmosphere

Joost Doornik is a Groningen artist who has specialised in painting en plein air. He graduated from the Academie Minerva and has been active as a painter for many years. In addition to his own practice, he is co-founder of Galerie Doornik & Schelfhout and a teacher at the Klassieke Academie in Groningen, where he focuses on perspective drawing, wet-on-wet model drawing and painting landscapes.

Doornik's work is characterised by a rich, personal visual language and a striking use of paint. His paintings, often colourful and powerful in touch, demonstrate a keen sense of light and atmosphere. In his café interiors, for example, the incoming sunlight subtly filters through the space, immersing it in a purple glow. The human presence is always palpable, whether it concerns a busy cityscape or an empty landscape.

Joost Doornik works in the tradition of French impressionism. Just like his examples from that movement, he captures the play of light and colour with loose and direct brushstrokes, often in the middle of the city centre of Groningen. He paints exclusively on location in order to capture the specific atmosphere of the moment, the nuance of the light, the silence or even the movement, as accurately as possible.

A beautiful example of this is the painting Fish Stall in the Twilight, Vismarkt. In this tranquil composition, Doornik depicts the transitional moment when the day makes way for the evening, and the emerging artificial light mixes with the last daylight. A subtle interplay of time and atmosphere in a characteristic place in Groningen.

Hans Hage My work has a very unique character

He says about his work:

‘My paintings and other work always represent something from reality. At first glance, my works are therefore often classified under the figurative movement. It is true that I am an adept of the Northern figuratives, originally from the Academie Minerva. However, I have followed my own path in this and my work has a very unique character because of this.

For Hans Hage, dissatisfaction with the everyday is an important motivation to make art. His work revolves around the mysterious. The search for something intangible, knowing that it may never be fully found. Making the ‘other’ visible as a contrast to the everyday is a common thread in his practice. His work therefore rarely offers one conclusive explanation; it raises questions rather than providing answers.

Although he uses traditional techniques, a work can just as easily result in an oil painting, a charcoal drawing, a pastel or another medium.

In his work he strives for a certain sobriety, both in subject and in use of colour and format. He has always continued to work figuratively, because recognisable images serve him better to convey his ideas than an abstract or non-figurative visual language.

Inge Peeze Paintings that stimulate the imagination

Inge Peeze lives and works in Bilthoven. She obtained her Master's degree at the Classical Academy of Fine Arts in Groningen. In 2023, she joined the artist group "QuasiRealists"

Inge Peeze's work seems realistic but has an alienating atmosphere due to the present calm, silence or emptiness. The inner world of experience of the present or absent figure is charged by the way in which the environment is depicted. Her paintings are not so much narrative. Inge wants to evoke individual associations in the viewer with an associated emotion or thought. Characteristic of all her work is a strong division of surfaces, geometric lines and powerful use of color.

Inge's scenes are carefully composed, creating a stage-like setting. She often uses material from her own image archive for her inspiration, such as self-made photos that she uses in sketches and collages. She creates images from fantasy based on these references. Sometimes she also makes small test setups of props that she then incorporates into her paintings. Inge does not use AI.

Cindy Sprokel Birds from Paradise

Cindy studied art at the Classical Academy of Sculpture in Groningen, where she graduated in 2018. Born in Maastricht and working in a theatre environment, it is not surprising that part of her work contains a clear nod to the carnivalesque and the theatrical.

Her sculptures are often a combination of human and bird. She starts from the classical human model and adds animal elements to it. This approach gives her work a quasi-realistic appearance: realistic in its basis, but with highly recognizable and alienating animal characteristics.

For these hybrid sculptures, Cindy uses prepared bird parts herself, such as skulls, wings and legs. The reuse of existing and recycled materials also plays an important role in her work. The crow is her favorite bird and regularly returns in her creations.

After her studies, Cindy took the initiative to set up the sculptors' collective 'Het Paradijs', a collaboration of sculptors in Groningen, located on the Paradijsvogelstraat. In addition to her work as a visual artist, Cindy is also active as a teacher. She teaches at the Klassieke Academie, Bij Vrijdag and within the collective Het Paradijs itself.
