Panorama to the enchanting
Artist Carien Vugts is making an installation especially for Galerie Noord
Visual artist Carien Vugts has created a continuous installation of drawings and collages especially for Galerie Noord. From April 4 to 7, visitors can see how she creates her great panorama. The opening of the exhibition In Tussen Tijd ('In Between Time') will take place on April 8 at 5:00 p.m. The exhibition will last through April 30.
Carien Vugts makes collages and assemblages of drawings. In her assemblages, she turns nature, architecture, everyday objects, sculptures and sometimes a single animal into enigmatic symbols. Those symbols seem inspired and generate their own powers. They will correspond to detaching the visitor from the everyday environment and offering a route to the enchanting.
She will build a continuous panorama in the space of Galerie Noord. In the front part of the gallery the sun is still shining, in the back it has just set. Unique to this exhibition is that the visitor can follow the artist's work process during the first few days. On April 4, she starts in an empty gallery and works towards the opening of her installation on April 8 at 5 p.m. The gallery is open during the working process.
The premise of In Tussen Tijd is questionable. Carien Vugts starts from a not-knowing that keeps giving her space for the images of changing possibilities. Intuition and coincidence predominate. Her drawings are not realistic and there are no laws regarding the use of perspective. Things of events that in reality never come together, events now with their own logical to underlying cohesion.
Carien Vugts lives and works in Utrecht and attended the Academy for Visual Education in Tilburg and the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. They then continued to develop in a series of artist in residencies and a few master classes. They exhibited in many solo, duo and group exhibitions, followed stipends and subsidies, including from the Mondriaan Fund, and in 2021 they released Valavond, a catalog with an overview of thirty years of work. She works both autonomously and on assignment.
Galerie Noord.
Galerie Noord is een expositieruimte in hartje Groningen. Vierwekelijks bieden we kunstenaars uit het Noorden de mogelijkheid recent werk te tonen, solo of in kleine groepen. Galerie Noord richt zich op autonoom, experimenteel en onderzoekend werk in vrijwel alle disciplines. We willen bezoekers verrassen door tentoonstellingen te bieden met een wisselend karakter.
Galerie Noord wordt volledig gerund door vrijwilligers. In 1997 werd de galerie opgericht als kunstenaarsinitiatief.
