About this activity.

Exhibition with drawings and work on paper by Lenneke van der Goot

In large drawings, small drawings, site-specific installations and murals, Lenneke van der Goot suggests spaces and places that are accessible, but which offer no guidance to the viewer. Sometimes in black and white, sometimes colorful and vibrant, these spaces are populated by multi-sided objects, precarious structures, weightless skyscraper cathedrals and tangle-like twisting sculptures. Drawn objects seem to float, in other work she allows three-dimensional shapes to emerge from the paper or the drawing itself is built up from different layers.

In her work, Van der Goot tries to visualize some of the complexity that she experiences in daily life. Such as the bustle of the city, the parallel worlds that come to us through screens and other channels and the way in which you can relate to all this. Like getting lost in the multitude of information, the grandeur of it all, or just getting lost in it and experiencing its beauty. She tries to shed light on this duality in her work, in which she does not have ready-made answers, but lets the imagination do the talking and investigates non-functional constructions and structures.

As in the new Surface Tension Series, a series of apparently layered drawings in which images pile up. New connections are made, but much remains hidden. A metaphor for the intensity of visual stimuli, in which both a seduction is hidden, but also the overview and understanding become increasingly complex.

All this is not literally depicted in Van der Goot's drawings. She tries to create a world that is fed by what she perceives around her, but which is detached from reality and forms its own metaphorical universe. In her drawings she tries to get a grip on the world behind visible reality.

With her work, Van der Goot positions herself as a draftsman in a broad sense. She won the EposPress Drawing Prize for young talent in 2014 and the Pim Olivier Graphics Prize in 2022. She made drawing installations for, among others, the Paper Biennale in Museum Rijswijk, law firm Kennedy van der Laan, Kunsthal KAdE, Drawing Center Diepenheim and Museum van Bommel van Dam. Her work was shown during the Amsterdam Drawing and Paper Positions Berlin trade fairs. Her practice is currently supported by an Artist Basis grant from the Mondriaan Fund.
