Exhibition Jan Bodde in Atelier Henk Kraayenzank
In the series of duo exhibitions Gasten ('Guests'), Henk Kraayenzank will receive Jan Bodde in his studio from 3 September.
Bodde lives and works in Baflo. Paints and draws mainly faces.
In a series of oil paintings made in recent years, those faces only have contact with the environment in the painting, not with the viewer, not with a body or clothing. Eyes are absent or closed.
"You could say that these faces are landscapes: a nose, an ear, a mouth are in the landscape of the face. In the face I see space. Like a view, like a framework to the timeless. The face falls together with the everything and the nothing. Or rather, it dissolves in the everything and the nothing."
The work on paper that will be on display in this exhibition exudes the same atmosphere, but is somewhat more narrative. The loner watches us, is sometimes in company or is depicted with a sheep, a butterfly, a dove.
"These are largely collages that I have put together from different drawings. Sometimes a work only partially succeeds. I cut out the parts that I thought were good, and put them together. And that has actually become a working method."
In addition to this work, Bodde also makes washed ink drawings. Sometimes in very large format: 200x300 cm for example. Some of these will also be on display in this exhibition.
As usual with the Gasten exhibition, this duo exhibition is a dialogue between the work of guest and host. In recent years, Kraayenzank's work has been a journey towards stillness: color and personal anecdotes have faded into the background.
