East wall Grote Markt

Michael Buter

About this artwork.

In 2009 painter Michael Buter (b. 1956) painted the painting of the East wall of the Grote Markt as a result of a visit to the Ferris wheel at the May Fair 2009. The east wall is depicted from an angle where you usually cannot see the east wall. This spontaneously created painting provides a wonderful vision of how a painter from Groningen sees the east wall. From the Ferris wheel he focused on the east wall and part of the south wall. In the top of the painting everything becomes blurred to indicate the speed of the Ferris wheel. Because the east wall would soon be demolished to make way for new construction, the municipality decided at the time to purchase the painting as a lasting memory.

Michael Buter is a painter from Groningen and was educated at the Minerva Academy from 1975 to 1981. In 2000 he received the Egberts Prize for painting. His work is striking because of the intense use of color, an expressionistic painting style and structure in the skin of the paintings. Buter is a painter who researches, experiments and searches for new structures of meaning, who edits his paintings, corrects them where necessary and makes all details subservient to the intention of the painting. Besides animals, architecture and urban landscapes are common subjects of Buter.
