OWN WORK
About this activity.
What happens if you invite the members of Fotogalerie Lichtzone, the entire photo discussion group, and the volunteers to submit work for an exhibition at short notice—without a theme? This leaves them with no basis for producing new images—even if they even had the time. This is such an exhibition.
It’s an interesting question: Lichtzone exhibitions often do have a theme. Last September, we depicted Intimacy, earlier this year we showed Street Photography, and we’re doing Portraits and Model
Each photographer puts their own unique spin on a subject. Regular visitors to the gallery will recognize the photographic signature of the participants—and perhaps even a system in how each photographer approaches a theme. One offers a literal representation of the subject. Another finds a form of abstraction, searching for associations to interpret the image. Most fall somewhere in between. And then there are always artists who simply present a nice photo, figuring that the theme should fit the image if the image doesn’t. Mohammed and the mountain, and all that.
Now, there’s no theme at all. Chances are that each participant is presenting work that they recognize, with which they want to distinguish themselves within the group of exhibitors. How does they achieve this? They might choose a few top favorites from their archive. They might also introduce us to their current photographic fascination—or they might be experimenting and are now showing the first results.
It’s not only fun, but also fascinating, that the viewer knows absolutely nothing about the exhibitors’ considerations. A nice assignment to think about during the tour of our gallery.
