Karina Puuffin (1997) is a Groningen-based Ukrainian visual artist.
In Off Hook, Karina delves into her past, her childhood and bittersweet memories of home. Not knowing if she will see her hometown, family and friends again, she tries to recreate the remnants of her memories through art.
The exhibition will develop over a period of several weeks. Visitors are invited to Off Hook to see the process of transforming the art space into a playground. The artist is present every Friday from 12-5 pm from December 2 until the opening show on January 6.
Puuffin was born and raised in a small town in Eastern Ukraine, where she was taught to appreciate traditional values of art and academic style. When she moved to the Netherlands, a completely new art scene opened up and her work turned into an endless celebration of art. The bright colours, black stripes and abstract shapes escape the canvas and enter into a dynamic relationship with the space. Inspired by modernism, the artist tries to break through the traditional ideas of the medium, by merging paintings into sculptural objects and vice versa. Her work has many references to Pop Art and comics culture, but also to general art history. It is serious and humorous, playful and strict at the same time - an endless process of (re)discovering new possibilities.
Karina Puuffin graduated in 2020 from art academy Minerva in Groningen. In the same year she was nominated for the Minerva Visual Art Prize, Buning Brongers Prize and RM Jong Bloed Prize. Her work has been part of exhibitions at Galerie Ron Mandos (best graduates of 2022), Het Hem and Museum Eicas. Karina was also featured in several magazine articles in Mister Motley and MetropolisM.
A limited-edition serigraph by Karina Puuffin will be available from Off Hook especially for this exhibition.
OFF HOOK.
OFF HOOK is an artist run space for contemporary art and exhibitions. It’s located at the corner of a former chemistry laboratory in Groningen, the Netherlands.
OFF HOOK is founded by Dutch artist Lydia Wierenga, with the goal to invite artists to “do what they want”.
OFF HOOK will also present screen-prints in limited editions and “a little something on the side”.
